Muslim groups denounce beheading of US journalist Steven Sotloff
Leading Muslim institutions denounced the killing of Steven Sotloff, the second US journalist to be executed by Islamic State militants and President Barrack Obama vowed to build a coalition to “degrade and destroy” the extremist group.
“This is obviously a criminal act which we greatly denounce,” Maha Akeel of the Organization of the Islamic Conference told Al Arabiya News, voicing the same condemnation the group issued when IS released a video of the execution of US journalist James Foley. “They claim that they do their acts in the name of Islam but their doing has nothing to do with Islam,” Akeel said.
“We can’t call them an Islamic group, but a criminal one,” she explained, emphasizing Al-Azhar’s online campaign, which urges people and news outlets to stop calling the group Islamic. Al-Azhar is the top Islamic authority in Egypt and it is also highly revered by many Muslims worldwide. Former deputy imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Mahmoud Ashour told Al Arabiya News that Sotloff’s killing was not only against humanity but “there is no religion that accepts the killing of a human soul.”
The largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization in the US, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said: “No words can describe the horror, disgust and sorrow felt by Muslims in America and worldwide at the unconscionable and un-Islamic violence perpetrated by the IS terror group. The criminal actions of IS are antithetical to the faith of Islam.”
Obama reaffirmed that Washington would not be intimidated by IS militants. “Those who make the mistake of harming Americans will learn that we will not forget and that our reach is long and that justice will be served,” he said. — Al Arabiya News/Agencies
What are major problems in Pakistan
The survey by the Pew Research Centre, which was partly released earlier this week, also shows that the price-hike has replaced energy shortage as the country’s number one problem. As many as 97 per cent of Pakistanis see rising prices as their number one problem while 90pc people still say it is the shortage of electricity.
The public opinion poll, taken in April and May this year, found that the United States and India, while wildly unpopular in Pakistan, earned higher favourability ratings than either Al Qaeda or the Taliban. Just 12pc of Pakistanis view Al Qaeda favourably while only 8pc say the same thing about the Taliban. Fourteen per cent Pakistani view the United States favourably and 13pc like India. The favourable view of the United States, although low, marks a 3pce increase from 2013, when only 11pc held a favourable view of the US.
The surveyors also discovered that unfavourable view of the United States had declined sharply in recent years, from a high of 80pc in 2012 to 59pc this year. This was 72pc in 2013. India too remains unpopular in Pakistan, with 71pc of respondents expressing an unfavourable view of it compared with 13pc holding a positive view. While extremely low, this 13pc rating still ranks India higher than either Al Qaeda or the Taliban. Still, Pakistanis continue to view India as a greater threat to their nation than either the Taliban or Al Qaeda. When asked which of the three groups posed the greatest threat to Pakistan, a slight majority (51pc) said that India did, compared with 25pc who answered with the Taliban and 2pc who said Al Qaeda.
In a separate survey of national priorities in Pakistan, 90pc also identified lack of jobs as the problem number one confronting Pakistan while 87pc saw the rising crime rate as their major concern. An overwhelming majority – 76pc – described the increasing rich-poor gap as the country’s number one problem. For 62pc, it is lack of health facilities and for 59pc it is the country’s corrupt leadership. Public debt is the most pressing problem for 58pc and for 57pc; it’s poor quality schooling.
Food safety comes after schooling with 52pc, followed by bad traffic, 52pc. Air pollution is a major problem for 40pc and water pollution is for 39pc. Thirty-nine per cent Pakistanis are concerned about Shia-Sunni tensions and 28pc about the situation in Afghanistan. The Indian influence in Afghanistan is a concern for 26pc.

The Ice Bucket Challenge
The Ice Bucket Challenge, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on one's head to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations to research. It went viralthroughout social media during mid 2014.[1][2] In the United Kingdom, people also participate in the challenge for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Origin
The origins of the idea of dumping cold water on one's head to raise money for charity are unclear and have been attributed to multiple sources. From mid 2013 to early 2014, a challenge of unknown origin often called the "Cold Water Challenge" became popular on social media in areas of the Northern United States. The task usually involved the option of either donating money to cancer research or having to jump into cold water.[4]
One version of the challenge, which took place in New Zealand as early as July 7, 2014, involved dousing participants with cold water and then donating to a charity; for example, the Auckland Division of the Cancer Society.[5] As with similar challenges, it was usually filmed so footage can be shared online.
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation popularized the "Cold Water Challenge" in early 2014 to raise funds as an unsanctioned spin-off of the polar plunge most widely used by Special Olympics as a fundraiser.[6] On May 20, 2014 the Washington Township, New Jersey fire department posted a video on YouTube participating in the "Cold Water Challenge" with fire hoses. Participating members of the department were subsequently punished for using fire department equipment without permission.[7]
The challenge first received increased media attention in the United States on June 30, 2014, when personalities of the program Morning Drive, which airs weekdays on Golf Channel, televised the social-media phenomenon, and performed a live, on-air Ice Bucket Challenge.[8]Soon after, the challenge was brought to mainstream audiences when television anchor Matt Lauer did the Ice Bucket Challenge on July 15, 2014 on NBC's The Today Show at Greg Norman's request.[9][10] On the same day, golfer Chris Kennedy did the challenge and then challenged his cousin Jeanette Senerchia of Pelham, NY, whose husband, Anthony, has had ALS for 11 years. A day later she did the challenge while her 6-year-old daughter filmed her in front of their house. Senerchia's network on Facebook connected with Pat Quinn, a 31-year-old in Yonkers, NY, who was diagnosed with ALS in March 2013. Quinn called upon his friends and family. Soon, his whole network was posting challenges, including family in Florida, friends in Ireland and Greece, and a bar full of locals, which was broadcast on local television.[citation needed]
Local Green Bay radio and TV personality John Maino performs the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
Quinn's Facebook network overlapped with Massachusetts resident and former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates, who has ALSand began posting about the challenge on Twitter.[11] Frates is a well-known patient advocate in the ALS community, having been awarded the Stephen Heywood Patients Today award in 2012 for his fundraising and advocacy work nicknamed the "Frate Train".[12] Frates' Boston College and sporting connections became an initial focus of the challenge and strengthened its focus on ALS.[13] In the following weeks, many celebrities and notable individuals also took the challenge.
The President of the United States, Barack Obama, was challenged by Ethel Kennedy but declined, opting to contribute to the campaign with a donation of $100.[14] Justin Bieber,[15] LeBron James,[16] and "Weird" Al Yankovic[17] also challenged President Obama after completing the Ice Bucket Challenge. Former president George W. Bush completed the challenge and nominated Bill Clinton.[18]
On August 21, 2014, several firefighters in Campbellsville, KY were injured by electric shock, including one critically, when the ladder they were using to spray the school band for the Ice Bucket Challenge came too close to a high-voltage power line.[19]
Rules
Within 24 hours of being challenged, participants are to video record themselves in continuous footage. First, they are to announce their acceptance of the challenge followed by pouring ice into a bucket of water. The bucket is then to be lifted overhead and poured over the participant's head. Then the participant can call out a challenge to other people.
Whether people choose to donate, perform the challenge, or do both varies. In one version of the challenge, the participant is expected to donate $10 if they have poured the ice water over their head or donate $100 if they have not.[20] In another version, dumping the ice water over the participant's head is done in lieu of any donation, which has led to some criticisms of the challenge being a form of slacktivism.[21] Many individual videos include the participant saying that they will be making a donation as well as performing the challenge.[citation needed]
Effects
In mid 2014, the Ice Bucket Challenge went viral on social media and became a pop culture phenomenon, particularly in the United States, with numerous celebrities, politicians, athletes, and everyday Americans posting videos of themselves online and on TV participating in the event.[3][14] According to The New York Times people shared more than 1.2 million videos on Facebook between June 1 and August 13 and mentioned the phenomenon more than 2.2 million times on Twitter since July 29.[22] Mashable called the phenomenon "the Harlem Shake of the summer".[9]
Prior to the widespread internet sensation of the Ice Bucket Challenge, public awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was relatively limited; the ALS Association state that prior to the challenge going viral only half of Americans had heard of the disease,[22]often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's disease", after baseball great Lou Gehrig who publicly revealed his diagnosis.
After the Ice Bucket Challenge went viral on social media, public awareness and charitable donations to ALS charities soared. On August 21, 2014, The New York Times reported that the ALS Association had received $41.8 million in donations from July 29 until August 21. More than 739,000 new donors have given money to the association, which is more than double the $19.4 million in total contributions the association received during the year that ended January 31, 2013.[23] Similarly, the ALS Therapy Development Institutereported a ten-fold increase in donations relative to the same period in 2014,[24] with over 2,000 donations made in a single day on August 20, 2014, while Project ALS reported a 50-fold increase.[25] In the United Kingdom, people have also been facing the challenge for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. The Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association is the only national charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland focused on MND care, research and campaigning.[26] MND Scotland provides care and support to everyone affected by Motor Neurone Disease in Scotland.[27]
Criticism
A number of criticisms have arisen relating to the campaign, accusing it of being self-congratulatory,[28] focusing primarily on fun rather than donating money to charity, and as an example of substituting a trivial activity for more genuine involvement in charitable activities. William MacAskill, Vice-President of Giving What We Can, suggested that the challenge encouraged moral licensing, meaning that some people might use taking part in the challenge as a substitute for other charitable acts. He also proposed that by attracting donations for ALS, the challenge was "cannibalizing" potential donations that otherwise would have gone to other charities instead.[29]
Steve-O questioned the campaign, suggesting that celebrities' videos generally forgot to share donation information for ALS charities, and that the initial $15 million dollars in funds was insignificant, given the star power of the celebrities participating. He noted that, of the videos he viewed, only Charlie Sheen and Bill Gates noted that the point is to donate money.[30]
Pamela Anderson refused to take part in the challenge because the use of animal experimentation in ALS research.[31] Members of the pro-life movement criticised the campaign because of the connection between embryonic stem cell research and ALS research.[32]
On August 22, 2014, Brian O'Neill, a physician at the Detroit Medical Center, warned that the challenge may have adverse health effects on participants, including potentially inducing a vagal response which might, for example, lead to unconsciousness in people taking blood pressure medications.[33]
Criticism also targeted the waste of water.[34]
Ebola outbreak is a public health emergency
.jpg)
"Countries affected to date simply do not have the capacity to manage an outbreak of this size and complexity on their own," Chan said at a news conference in Geneva. "I urge the international community to provide this support on the most urgent basis possible." The agency had convened an expert committee this week to assess the severity of the continuing epidemic.
The current outbreak of Ebola began in Guinea in March and has since spread to Sierra Leone and Liberia, with a suspected cluster in Nigeria. There is no licensed treatment or vaccine for Ebola. The impact of the WHO declaration is unclear; the declaration about polio doesn't yet seem to have slowed the spread of virus. "Statements won't save lives," said Dr. Bart Janssens, director of operations for Doctors Without Borders. "For weeks, (we) have been repeating that a massive medical, epidemiological and public health response is desperately needed. ... Lives are being lost because the response is too slow."
"I don't know what the advantage is of declaring an international emergency," added Dr. David Heymann, who directed WHO's response to the SARS outbreak and is now a professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine."This could bring in more foreign aid but we don't know that yet," he said.
In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have already elevated their Ebola response to the highest level and have recommended against traveling to West Africa. On Friday, American health officials also eased safety restrictions on an experimental drug to treat Ebola, a move that could clear the way for its use in patients. Two Americans infected with the deadly virus recently received a different drug never before tested in people and seem to be improving slightly, according to the charity they work for.
Other experts hoped the WHO declaration would send more health workers to West Africa.
"The situation is very critical and different from what we've seen before," said Dr. Heinz Feldmann, chief of virology at the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. "There are so many locations with transmission popping up and we just need more people on the ground." WHO did not recommend any travel or trade bans but said people who had close contact with Ebola patients should not travel internationally. For countries with Ebola, WHO issued various recommendations, including exit screening at international airports and border crossings to spot potential cases. It also discouraged mass gatherings. WHO said countries without Ebola should heighten their surveillance and treat any suspected cases as a health emergency.
This week, two of the worst-hit Ebola countries — Liberia and Sierra Leone — brought in troops to enforce quarantines and stop people infected with the disease from traveling. Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said no one with a fever would be allowed in or out of the country and warned some civil liberties could be suspended if needed to bring the virus under control. Chan said while extraordinary measures might be necessary to contain the outbreak, it is important to recognize civil rights.
"We need to respect the dignity of people and inform them why these measures are being taken," she said. — AP
Walking: Why it’s so important
Family doctor Dr. Saleh Al-Ansari said walking is not just about physical exercise, but it is a highly beneficial sport for intellectual growth and exercise as well.
“We must increase awareness in society especially now with the rise in obesity rates. The media plays a highly effective and influential role in the matter; schools and universities also play their part in raising awareness among the youth. The private sector also plays a role through its social corporate responsibility and its concern for its employees and while the private sector can sponsor awareness campaigns, what really needs to be done is to build more walkways. Sidewalks should also be fixed so people can use them too,” he was quoted as saying.
Dr. Al-Ansari went on to explain the many benefits of walking and urged people with obesity to take regular walks if they can’t exercise. “Hippocrates himself said walking is the best medicine for humans. Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche also mentioned that great ideas generate when walking. A very recent Stanford study proved that walking enhances creativity and innovation in thoughts and ideas. Exercise is not just for the obese, even healthy weight people have fat stored in their bodies from food that will only go away with exercise,” he added.
He advised people to walk between 30 and 60 minutes, 5 to 7 times a week. Kids, however, should exercise at least one hour a day. To maintain a healthy exercise schedule, Dr. Al-Ansari said people should increase their daily walking distance by no more than 10 percent every week. “The best time for walking is after Fajr prayer. The distance and speed of walking depends on gender and age group. There is a right way of exercising but the most important thing is to start at a comfortable speed and distance and gradually increase from there.”
According to a report in Agence France Presse, Dr. Rob Danoff, a member of the American Osteopathic Association, said sitting for long periods of time can prove particularly damaging to the health because sitting causes back pains and lax muscles which increase probability of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The American Health Institute revealed that an average American spends 7.7 hours a day with no exercise and 70 percent of American employees spend five hours sitting at their desks. The more hours you spend sitting the more the blood circulation is hindered. This, in turn, causes greater damage and health risks.
The Annals of Internal Medicine published a study showing that health risks increase by 15 percent for people who spend eight hours a day sitting and an increase by 40 percent for those who spend even longer hours sitting in comparison to those who spend less than four hours of their day sitting.
The American Medical Association recently urged the business sector to find better working solutions for their employees. Some of the solutions included elevated desks and inflated seats that promote ergonomic health and posture. However, Dr. Rob Danoff said standing, for too long is also unhealthy. Therefore, he proposed the following: Stand for one minute every 30 minutes, walk down the hallways, use the stairs instead of the elevator, and walk up to a colleague rather than sending an e-mail.
“There are many such simple solutions to the problem that do not require any advanced and expensive devices or technology,” he said. — SG

The BJP’s victory in India Elections
The recent landslide victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with new Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the helm, is a big test for the world’s largest democracy India. After the miserable performance of the Indian National Congress (INC), people’s expectations are very high.
Sixty percent of the country’s population is dependent on agriculture and poverty is increasing in rural areas, with unemployment also on the up. With its weakening economy, India’s relations with neighboring countries such as China and Pakistan and the rights of minorities will be a big challenge for the new government.
Thousands of Muslims lost their lives in the Gujarat riots when Modi was prime minster of Gujarat. Although Modi always distances himself from a former hard stance on minorities and the killings in Gujarat, years ago the US and the UK denied visas to Modi.
Several key figures in Modi’s government were involved in the Gujarat riots and some of them were recently punished by the judiciary. Minorities are also worried about the hard stance of Modi’s government on Bengali migrants.
